FIRST is an international volunteer-led and volunteer-run organization founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen, a prolific inventor, entrepreneur, and tireless advocate for science and technology. The mission of FIRST is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting Mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership. Today, the FIRST programs reach over 400,000 young people annually.

Every year four programs for different ages from Kindergarten to grade 12 students are organized by FIRST.
